Beach Activities in Gerringong

Gerringong to Kiama Coastal Walk

This is a moderately challenging route that stretches for about 11 kilometres. Depending on your fitness level, you can take anywhere from 2 hours to 3 hours to complete the walk. Locals and visitors like to jog and hike along this coastal trail, so you are sure to be joined by other people. You’ll walk past cliff edges and sandy beaches, mostly on exposed terrains. Hence, you want to carry water and some sun protection.

If you want to swim or snorkel, there are two popular spots where you can visit for a fun experience. One is the Boat Harbour Ocean Pool, which is accessed via the Boat Harbour Reserve on the southernmost part of Werri Beach. The other one is the South Werri Ocean Pool, accessed via Geering Street and Pacific Avenue. Both these pools have parking areas, change rooms, and other essential amenities on site.

Gerringong Whale Watching

For whale lovers, there’s a whale-watching platform on the Gerringong Headland where you can spot whales migrating north from May to July. From September through November, whales also migrate south. You can access this platform from Belinda Street near the Gerringong Cemetery. While it’s free to visit and use this platform, it doesn’t cater to people with special access needs.

Werri Beach

This is one of the most visited beaches in Gerringong, thanks to the ease of access and lots of facilities ideal for families. The Beach is perfect for paddling and surfing, plus it features picnic tables and a rockpool for swimming in the southern end. Werri Beach is dog-friendly, and there’s an off-leash area in the middle of the Beach. If you wish to, you can also access the Werri Beach to Kiama Coast Walk from the coastline.

This surf school is run by a professional surfing expert who teaches surfing and skateboarding in a controlled environment. Gerringong Rotary Village Market

Gerringong Rotary Markets is a small market located near the Gerringong Town Hall and Park within the Kiama Municipality. The market features a variety of locally sourced goods and craft items. You’ll also find lots of food cafes and shops selling local products such as breads, cheeses, pies, and meat. The market day is on the third Saturday of every month, but some stalls are open daily. 

Gerringong Park for the Kids

Located along 110 Fern Street is Gerringong Park, also known as Old School Park. The park features several facilities, such as picnic tables, shade areas, toilets, and an extensive playground. There’s also a wedding ceremony venue where you can host events and functions. If you are visiting with kids, this is a great place to add to your travel itinerary.

Werri Lagoon, Gerringong

The Werri Lagoon is located at the northernmost end of Werri Beach. It’s a great spot for recreational fishing and canoeing. This lagoon happens to be the southern end-point of the popular Kiama Coast Walk. During strong sea tides or heavy rainfall, the area is occasionally open to the sea, making it impossible to access or even walk on the Beach. The lagoon is free of charge and offers several facilities, except that it doesn’t cater to people with special access needs.

Crooked River Winery & Cellar Door

This is a family-owned winery located on the beautiful south coast of New South Wales. The Crooked River vineyard was established in the late 1990s and has been in production for more than 24 years. Besides being one of the best places to taste various wines from the Illawarra region, you can also attend weddings, go on a date, or spend a weekend out for a fun time as you enjoy expansive views.

Buena Vista Farm

If you wish to connect with nature, especially animals, and have a taste of locally and sustainably grown foods, a visit to the Buena Vista Farm is worth it. This farm is located along 250 Fern Street and has been in existence for more than 150 years. The land runs through to the ocean, which is unique and refreshing. The owners of Buena Vista farm run farm tours and a cooking school, plus when you visit, you get to interact with the goats, hens, and other farm animals. You’ll also participate in the cheese-making process and learn some homesteading skills and tips. 

Gerringong Bowling Club

Located at the southern end of Werri Beach is the Gerringong Bowling Club, which is home to an expansive playground, a bar, and a bowling green. This is an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend out. The club welcomes members as well as guests. Besides the great views of the Gerringong hills and the adjacent sea, you can also enjoy delicious Australian and Malay dishes from any of the two restaurants within the premises. 

Gerringong Headland

This Headland is located on Tasman Drive and is one of the high areas that offers expansive views of the ocean and the coastline. The Gerringong headland features a rock pool, picnic tables, toilets, and a wedding ceremony venue.

The Cedar Ridge Studio is home to a collection of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Robyn has been working as a professional artist for decades and has won numerous awards and prizes. She is open on the first weekend of every month, but you can call to book an appointment at any time. Most of her artwork is for sale, including photographs, cards, sculptures, and paintings. This studio is located along 287 Free Selectors Rd, Foxground.

Soul Clay Studios

If you are eager to join some pottery classes or explore some handmade ceramics, this is the place to be. Soul Clay Studios is located along Unit 3, 51 Rowlins Road, and is one of the art studios that has created job opportunities for local artists. The studio offers Hands-on hand-building and Saturday Soul Sessions, which provide a chance to try pottery before you can enroll in a weekly class.
